| The Artigas Gardens stand
amid a spectacular landscape of large rocky escarpments
crossed by the river Llobregat, in a wild setting with
a lush native vegetation. The architectural structures
here recall those of Parc Güell, but in the Artigas
Gardens the materials are characteristic of the pre-Pyrenees
mountain area where La Pobla de Lillet is found: flagstones,
pumice, river stones and marl, accompanied by the Portland
cement used to build the gardens’ naturalistic
walls and railings.
In addition to the river Llobregat, which crosses the
garden along a rocky course, there are many natural
springs of water, which Gaudí decorated to make
them figured fountains: the Fountain of the Cascade,
the Fountain of the Ox, the Fountain of the Lion, and
the Fountain of the Grotto.
The two banks of the river are joined by the Pont d’Arc
Coix (Lame-Arch Bridge) and the Pont dels Arcs (Bridge
of Arches). The emblematic feature of the gardens, the
Glorieta (pavilion) is on a rocky escarpment.
Also present in the gardens are the attributes of the
four Evangelists: the eagle (St John), the ox (St Luke)
and the lion (St Mark), while the angel representing
St Matthew, situated at the Fountain of the Cascade,
is not on view at present. Other symbolic figurations
include serpents, which protect the sole entrance that
Gaudí designed for the gardens, and the figures
of man and woman, at the foot of the Bridge of Arches.
