Domènech i Montaner house-museum This
museum ensemble includes the farmhouse Masia Rocosa,
from the 16th century, and the Casa Domènech,
built between 1908 and 1910 by Domènech i Montaner,
his son Pere Domènech and his son-in-law, Francesc
Guàrdia. The whole complex was inaugurated as
a museum in the year 1998, after some meticulous restoration
works.
Lluís Domènech was born in 1849 in Barcelona,
the city where he was to unfold a large part of his
architectural, intellectual and political activity.
His ties with Canet de Mar are due to his mother, Maria
Montaner, who was a daughter of the Casa Forta, and
to his wife, Maria Roura, who was born in this town
of the Maresme as well. These two factors caused the
architect to make long stays in the town, above all
in the summer. In his office at the Masia Rocosa, he
designed such well-known buildings as the Cafè
Restaurant and the International Hotel of the Universal
Exposition of 1888, the Palau de la Música Catalana,
the Hospital de Sant Pau and the University of Comillas,
among others. It should also be noted that he erected
diverse buildings in Canet de Mar, aside from his own
residence. At Riera (torrent) Sant Domènec may
be seen the Athenaeum and Casa Roura, while in the woods
of Pedracastell stands the castle Castell de Santa Florentina.
The house-museum is quite interesting because Domènech
i Montaner always requested copies of his collaboarators’
works. For this reason one finds, for example, the decoration
of Barcelona’s Fonda Espanya in his study, elsewhere
the plaster models of the University of Comillas, and
curious ceramic pieces throughout the house.
Aside from its architectural aspect, the house-museum
also reflects other spheres of interest of Domènech
i Montaner, and especially his political and publishing
activity. Lluís Domènech i Montaner was
one of the driving forces behind political Catalanism
and here we find a large part of his correspondence
and his studies on Catalan heraldics. In the field of
printing, the architect designed and directed works
of great magnitude, such as the Enciclopedia General
del Arte (General Encyclopaedia of Art).
The modernista route The
Modernista route of Canet de Mar is organised at the
house-museum. There are seven guided tours that allow
one to become acquainted with the town’s heritage
as a whole. This heritage is formed by diverse buildings
that range from rural and Late Gothic architecture to
the purest Modernisme of Lluís Domènech
i Montaner and Josep Puig i Cadafalch. There are also
Neo-Gothic buildings such as the sactuary Santuari de
la Misericòrdia, designed by Francesc Daniel
Molina, or works of agricultural Modernisme such as
Vil·la Flora, designed by Eduard Ferrés.
Aside from this, Canet de Mar was fortunate enough to
become the place of residence of persons who, having
grown wealthy in the colonies in the Americas, returned
to build majestic houses in the eclectic or Neo-Classical
styles. This expansion of art was also tied to the growth
of industrial and especially textile activity. In Canet
there are two paradigmatic examples: the Jover i Companyia
Factory, designed by Pere Domènech i Roura, and
the Carbonell Sussagna Factory, by Josep Puig i Cadafalch.
In addition to architectural works, the Modernista
routes also look at sculptural elements. Canet de Mar
is the site of works by some of the great Catalan sculptors
from the end of the 19th century and the beginning of
the 20th, such as Pau Gargallo, Eusebi Arnau, Josep
Viladomat and Josep Pagès i Serratosa.
